How did you get started with Crossfit?
I played soccer for 10 years but quit for lack of time, or at least that was the excuse I was telling myself. I have friends in Italy that were talking about CrossFit just before I moved to Greenwood. After few months here, on a lazy Saturday afternoon, I decided to search on the internet and I found CFG. I jumped in the car, met Justin and Jacob and joined for a trial week. The next Monday morning at 5:15 am I was doing my first class. I have not been able to stop since then.
What do you remember about your first WOD? Or what is one memorable WOD for you?
The first day, Paused Front Squat. I remember the empty barbell and the medicine ball to check the depth. Now, every time I squat, I repeat myself what Justin kept telling me: “Sit back, knees out”.
The first time I did Murph was great. I have been sore for days after that.
What are your goals in terms of Crossfit or Fitness in general?
My primary goal is improving my overall fitness daily and maintaining it as long as possible. I learned not to skip steps and work on proper technique before looking for big numbers.
I have a list of CrossFit goals that I’ve set for myself and I try to tackle them one at a time. I feel great because I have scratched several in the last months. The next two are getting a bar muscle up and improve my Snatch.
Any advice for people just getting started?
If you think you are not fit enough to start CrossFit you are wrong. Everyone has to start somewhere and that will be your baseline. Don’t worry if you have to scale, don’t compare yourself to others but focus on your weaknesses. Dedication and hard work will help you reach what you have never thought possible and you will be impressed by your achievements.
CrossFit helped me improve not only my physical strength but mostly my mental toughness.
Never give up, take a deep breath and keep moving, during a workout or in your personal life.
I really enjoy doing every type of Clean, even if the best remains the one and only full Squat Clean. My favorite WOD is DT.
Least favorite WOD/Skill:
Every gymnastic movement is a pain. I am 6.3ft and as flexible as the wood logs we have at the box. Without any doubt, Toes to Bar is at the top of my “struggle list”.
Favorite CFG Moments:
The entire CrossFit Open was amazing. I enjoyed the workouts and the community. Everyone was pushing to give the best and the support was unbelievable. I have never felt that bad and that good at the same time like when I finished 16.5.
Another one is getting my first ring muscle up. I have worked on that for weeks, drill after drill after drill. I was so pumped up when I finally got one.
Joining the 200lb club with a 205 C&J after completing the Oly class is for sure another great moment.
Hobbies, Interests, or Talents outside of Crossfit:
I love cars and I love movies. The older, the better. I grew up with the US cinematography and I would really like to drive around on a late 60s dark green Mustang fastback like in “Bullitt”. Having a Gran Torino of the same color won’t be bad either.
I also enjoy cooking. I always start with fresh raw ingredients and then I play with them. If you are wondering because I am Italian then no, I don’t cook pasta every day.
